SHRED for FRED

The Shred For Fred Benefit got underway on Saturday, March 5th at Bruce & Diane Reynold's, Café Surfinista in Cocoa Beach, FL, in the name of revered glasser and shaper, Virginia Beach, VA, native, Brevard County resident of 45 years and East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame member Fred Grosskreutz. Fred was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer in 2010 and has had a round of surgeries with more to come, so all funds raised at the Shred For Fred Benefit will go directly to him and his family. Grosskreutz was an early ESA standout and Hobie and Weber teamrider, as well as a North Shore staple in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. After pioneering a left near Velzyland with Phillip Irons and Ricky Hendrickson, the locals in the area named it “Freddieland,” a name that sticks to this day. Over the years, Fred has worked with such Brevard County, FL, surfboard luminaries as Dick Catri, Pat O’Hare, Claude Codgen, Bill Eberwein, Bill Freeman, Lewis Graves, and John Parton, with the last 20 years spent with Jim and Ed Leasure and Bruce Ragan of Quiet Flight Surfboards.  A 9' ’6"″ custom Stix By Dix/Quiet Flight long board built by Bruce Ragan, Barry Dix and Bob Seaback was raffled off at the benefit bringing in over $6500.  Door prizes and a silent auction was ongoing during the evening with donations from attendees and local merchants.  Total proceeds for the event was over $14,000!

Donations to the Frederic Grosskreutz Medical Fund are still accepted at:  Any Bank of America or by contacting Barry Dix 321-720-5964 (stixbydix@cfl.rr.com) or Bruce Reynolds 321-613-3864  (thesurfinistas@yahoo.com)
